Tax Return Specialists

Self Assessment Done Properly. Not Just Filed — Optimised.

A self-assessment tax return filed correctly is not just about meeting a deadline — it is about ensuring every allowable expense is claimed, every allowance is used, and your tax liability is as low as it legally can be.

Figures UK go beyond simply entering numbers and pressing submit. We review your income and expenses thoroughly, advise on pension contributions and timing decisions that can reduce your bill, and explain clearly what you owe and why — before the return is filed.

As one of the very first accounting firms in the UK to adopt Xero with our clients — along with receipt extraction software — we keep your records digital and accurate all year, so your return is prepared from clean, complete data.

Self-assessment is included within your fixed monthly fee. There are no one-off charges for your annual return, and you have unlimited access to our team for tax questions throughout the year.

Common Questions

Self Assessment FAQs

How easy is it to switch accountants, and can you take over partway through the year?

Very easy — and yes, you can switch at any point in the year. As one of the very first UK firms to use Xero with clients, we make the handover seamless: we request your records, migrate your books into Xero, and handle the transfer to HMRC and Companies House for you. There's no disruption to your deadlines and no need to wait for year end.

Who needs to complete a self-assessment tax return?

You must complete a self-assessment return if you are self-employed (sole trader or partner), a company director, receive rental income, have untaxed income over £1,000, earn over £100,000, or receive income from overseas. HMRC can also ask anyone to complete a return. Figures UK can advise whether you need to register.

What is the self-assessment deadline?

For online returns, the deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year. For example, for the 2023/24 tax year (ending 5 April 2024), the online deadline is 31 January 2025. The payment deadline for any tax owed is also 31 January. HMRC charges a £100 automatic penalty for late filing. Figures UK file all returns well before the deadline.

What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?

Allowable expenses include: office costs (stationery, phone), travel (business mileage, train fares), clothing (uniforms only), staff costs, stock and raw materials, financial costs (bank charges, accounting fees), premises costs (rent, utilities), advertising and marketing, and training relevant to your business. Figures UK review all your expenses to maximise your legitimate claims.

How much does self-assessment cost with Figures UK?

Self-assessment is included within your fixed all-inclusive monthly fee — £73/month for sole traders on Making Tax Digital. There are no additional charges for tax return preparation, filing, or unlimited tax advice throughout the year.

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

MTD for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) requires sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 to submit quarterly digital updates to HMRC from April 2026, with the threshold dropping to £30,000 from April 2027. Figures UK are already preparing clients for this change using Xero — we will migrate you ahead of your obligation date.

Can you help if I have missed previous self-assessment deadlines?

Yes. If you have unfiled returns or outstanding tax, Figures UK can help you get compliant. We work with HMRC to file overdue returns, calculate the penalties and interest owed, and in some cases negotiate time-to-pay arrangements on your behalf.
